What would you do?
I’d say we had a pretty good weekend here, got to enjoy some gorgeous sunny weather, see a movie, do some shopping, finally find a new toaster and add to our saltwater fish tank. We purchased a sand sifting goby on Saturday as we had intended to get one last weekend, even had it on hold, but someone went and sold it. We thought it would be a good addition to our tank as he would keep the sand ’sifted’ so as to hopefully prevent the growth of brown algae. Since we were out late Saturday night, we didn’t get a chance to see how well he had adjusted to the tank as the light was off by the time we got home. Peering in on Sunday morning, we spotted him at the back of the tank behind the rocks and could only see the back half of his body, which was not moving, AT ALL. We checked on him a few times over the span of a couple hours and he did not move, so we thought he was dead. While I showered, the boy went to retrieve him so we could take him back to the pet store and hopefully get a replacement or something. Unfortunately, he drifted under a rock and we were unable to get him out of there, but we figured we would still go to the pet store and see what they would do as it didn’t seem right we just bought this fish and it was already dead.
After looking tirelessly most of the day for a toaster, and finally getting one, our last stop on the way home was the pet store. We told the guy what happened and he said he wasn’t surprised as the other goby they had in there had died as well and told us they can be rather sensitive in adjusting to new surroundings. We thought, gee, would have been nice if someone had told us that before we bought him, but the guy was good about it and said we could get another fish. Since there were no more goby’s, and we didn’t really want one anymore due to their ’sensitivity’, we set to trying to figure out what fish we wanted, which seems to be a very difficult thing for us, deciding what fish we want to add, it’s quite silly actually. We were about to just get a store credit as no fish was really saying ‘buy me, buy me’, when I said, why don’t we just get the red crabs we had been looking at, so we did. We get home and I’m letting the dog out of her crate, when, out of the corner of my eye, I notice something different in the fish tank, upon taking an actual ‘look’, I was like, NO WAY. There, swimming around in the front of the tank was, you guessed it, the sand sifting goby. The boy and I just looked at each other in utter disbelief and said, what are we going to do now? The fish was dead, it hadn’t moved at all, and yet, here it was swimming around like it owned the place, how is that possible, we pondered. The boy was like, I can’t have this karma on me, and I said I know, but it’s not like we intentionally deceived the pet store to get some free crabs. The boy said, I know, and I feel stupid taking the crabs back now. We decided to keep the crabs and that, if the goby actually continued to live, we would tell the pet store what happened next time we were in there. We know though, that at least the goby or the crabs, or both, will die though because that’s just how Karma works…
